You are always in control of the intensity of your workout. You can do long, easy runs, threshold-pace intervals, or high-intensity sprint and track workouts. A classic full-body running workout includes high-intensity running intervals and threshold pace runs alternating with resistance, flexibility, and recovery drills . You can also choose from a variety of workout types depending on your fitness goals: simulated track workouts, hill workouts, 5ks/10ks, obstacles courses, etc.

A flotation belt enables you to float in the water without effort so you can focus on maintaining good running form and easily switch from high-intensity to recovery pace. It also allows your head (and hair!) to stay out of the water at all times.
My all-time favorite belt (and I have tried dozens of belts) is from WaterGym--comfortable, durable (I have 7-year old belts in perfect condition) and nice looking, too. Some tips for shopping online for aquatic apparel:
Look at ALL the photos/videos and read ALL the reviews. This is where you will find the critical details about fit, fabric, and how the item holds up in the water. Double check those size charts, too as they differ between manufacturers.

make it a sleeveless, zip-up wetsuit vest. You can wear this year-round, zipping it over a long-sleeve rashguard in the winter and pairing it with a different set of bottoms (board shorts, hipsters, boy shorts, bikinis) every day during the summer.
My pick, and my clients' unanimous favorite, is the NeoSport 2.5mm Women's Front Zipper Neoprene Sport Vest in Black available online at www.leisurepro.com. It has a figure flattering cut, high-armholes so you don't chafe your arms when you are sprinting at high speed, and a neck hole and zipper top that don't ride up your neck. And the price is right under $40!
Great workout music is critical to enjoying and being fully engaged in your deep water running experience. A comfortable set of lightweight, waterproof bluetooth headphones connected to a favorite playlist on your phone or ipod will enable you to immerse yourself in the excitement of sprinting, running up hills and over obstacles, and enable you to push yourself to your limits.
Plantronics, JlAb and Bose have some of the best sound quality, BUT fit and comfort are very personal and you can only know for sure by trying them out. You can find these on Amazon, at Best Buy and other audio retailers.
Watching your heart rate soar to 90-95 and even 100% of you max heart rate during a DWR Sprinterval workout is extremely motivating. We all want those HIIT fitness benefits, but the risk of injury is too great with most workouts. During a DWR Spinterval workout there is virtually no risk of injury AND you are immersed in a recovery solution (cool water) that protects you from overheating.
While you can check your pulse manually between intervals and use Rate of Perceived Exertion (how hard you are breathing) to gauge your effort level, with a Heart Rate Monitor you can glance at your heart rate (HR) DURING your interval and adjust your pace up or down. You can also discover which running techniques have a greater impact on your heart rate and refine your running technique in real time.
If you have an Apple Watch, you have a built in waterproof HR monitor, but if not,
my favorite source for every kind of heart rate monitor is Heart Rate Monitors USA at www.heartratemonitorsusa.com. You can compare HR monitors on their site --chest strap monitors vs. wrist-only, Fitbit vs Polar--and compare prices, too.
My personal favorite is the Polar FT1 because of its accuracy, its large, uncluttered readout that allows me to actually monitor my heart rate while I am sprinting in churning water (!), and its budget friendly price. It also has a simple, one button control that reduces frustration when you just want to focus on your workout!
